3.1 Terms

For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.

3.1.1   aggregating object

an object that contains other objects (components)

3.1.2   component object

an object that is contained by an aggregating object

3.1.3   constraint

syntactic or semantic condition or restriction

3.1.4   data model

a description of the organization of data in a manner that reflects the information structure of an enterprise

3.1.5   enumerant

one of the values of an enumerated data type or the name of a value of a selection item data type

3.1.6   environmental data

an integrated set of data elements, each describing some aspect of an environment and the elements or events expected there

3.1.7   environmental phenomenon

an individual element of the physical environment

3.1.8   environmental representation

a representation of all or part of an environment, including permanent, semi-permanent, or virtual entities

3.1.9   inheritance

the object-oriented concept where a child class also has the features (attributes and methods) of its parent class

3.1.10 interoperability

the ability of a model or simulation to provide services to and accept services from other models and simulations, and to use the services so exchanged to enable them to operate effectively together

3.1.11 level of detail (LOD)

alternate representations of an object at varying fidelities based on some criteria

3.1.12 metadata

data that defines and describes other data

3.1.13 MIP level

one of  a set of images each representing the same conceptual picture the largest of which is at full resolution and others at various down-sampled resolutions (see MIP)

3.1.14 model

a physical, mathematical, or otherwise logical representation of a system, entity, phenomenon, or process

3.1.15 property

a characteristic of an object

3.1.16 representational polymorphism

multiple representations of the same data to serve the needs of different users

3.1.17 SEDRIS abstract transmittal format

the general organization, structure, and allowable content that is required for all external representations of SEDRIS transmittals (defined in ISO/IEC 18023-2)

3.1.18 SEDRIS application

any application software that can consume or produce a SEDRIS transmittal (e.g., to view, verify, or validate the data; or to convert to a target format)

3.1.19 SEDRIS Transmittal Format (STF)

The specific binary encoding of the SEDRIS abstract transmittal format as defined in ISO/IEC 18023-3

3.1.20 selection value

one of the values allowed by the definition of a selection item data type

3.1.21 texel

a single element of an image used as a texture

3.1.22 texture

an image or a set of images applied to a surface representation to depict detail

3.1.23 tile

one of a set of identical planar shapes that have been arranged to completely cover an area

3.1.24 traversal

the movement from one object to another through a relationship between them, as in crossing between nodes in graph theory
