Documentation Suite

Quick Scroll To:

The why, what and how of SEDRIS is described in a suite of management and technical documents. The entire documentation suite addresses the totality of SEDRIS. Also, see the SEDRIS Papers Product Information page for additional sources of information on SEDRIS.

SEDRIS Documentation Suite

The audience for various documents within the SEDRIS Documentation Suite is: senior managers, project managers/system engineers, developers/conrtractors, operators/users, trainers/trainees, and standards writers.

SEDRIS documentation is organized into a suite of document "sets", as shown in the figure and described below.

SEDRIS Documentation: a suite of document sets

  • Technology Documentation Set
  • A set of overview and technical documents on SEDRIS that describe the why, what, and how of SEDRIS. This documentation set is aimed at the entire SEDRIS documentation audience.
  • Standards Documentation Set
  • A set of specifications for the SEDRIS data representation model, the application program interfaces (APIs), and the SEDRIS transmittal format (STF). Each is completely described such that vendors could develop their own version of the product. This documentation set is aimed at standards writers.
  • Training Materials Documentation Set
  • A set of instructional material, as well as a set of review/test questions with answers, that can be used to ensure understanding of SEDRIS concepts and products. This documentation set is aimed at trainers/trainees.
  • Marketing Materials Documentation Set
  • A set of materials that provide a high-level overview of the SEDRIS project and products, as well as a brief synopsis of the SEDRIS-related work of the SEDRIS industry partners. These are used at conferences, demonstrations, and briefings as handout material. This documentation set is aimed at senior managers, project managers/system engineers, and operators/users.

Technology Documentation Set Description

An overview of the contents of each "part" of the Technology Documentation Set appears below.

  • Part 1: Introduction to SEDRIS and the Technology Documentation Set
  • Provides the reader with a top-level overview of the SEDRIS project, a guide to SEDRIS technology, a roadmap to the Technology Documentation Set, and an overview of the SEDRIS web site. This document is aimed at the entire SEDRIS documentation audience.
  • Part 2: SEDRIS and The Synthetic Environment Domain
  • Provides background information on the creation and use of synthetic environment databases required to understand the problem that SEDRIS solves. This document addresses the "why do we need SEDRIS" question. Additionally, the terms/technology that the reader needs to know to fully understand the synthetic environment domain problem are introduced and defined. This document is aimed at senior managers, operators/users, and trainers/trainees.
  • Part 3: SEDRIS Basics
  • Introduces the SEDRIS project, its development history, specific products, and explains how the problem of data interchange between synthetic environment databases is satisfied (i.e., presents the solution that SEDRIS is implementing to the data interchange problem introduced in Part 2). The major emphasis of this document is on "what" is being accomplished. Part 3 also provides a listing of SEDRIS-specific abbreviations, acronyms, and definitions of terminology used throughout the other documentation. This document is aimed at the entire SEDRIS documentation audience.
  • Part 4: Technical Reference Set
  • Provides technical guidance to members of the data provider and data consumer communities. Provides explicit "how-to" information for the development of new SEDRIS products, as well as the use of existing products. Due to its size, this document is divided into many stand-alone "volumes". Volume 1 provides a detailed description of the contents of each individual volume contained in Part 4. As necessary, each volume of the reference set provides technical information covering all hardware platforms supporting the product. This reference set is aimed at developers/contractors, operators/users, and trainers/trainees.
  • Part 5: Tools and Utilities User's Guide Set
  • Contains multiple stand-alone volumes that provide "how-to" information for the use of each SEDRIS software tool and utility. As necessary, provides specific instructions for each hardware platform supporting a tool. This document is aimed at developers and contractors, and trainers and trainees.
  • Part 6: Procedures and Processes Manual
  • Provides a series of procedures and processes used to manage the SEDRIS project. It addresses configuration management, the SEDRIS FTP site, and the development process for SEDRIS core software, among others. This document is aimed at project managers/system engineers, and developers/contractors.
